This occurred particularly as a result of Calvin’s, not Luther’s, insistence on the church’s freedom from the state and the state’s freedom from the church that in turn also eventually produced disciplined capitalism, science and technology, and economic prosperity. In yet another way, then – in the political freedom the Western nations enjoy now over against what would have possibly been military subjection to an Islamic theocracy – we here in the West are indebted to the providentially-arranged thought and activity of John Calvin.”
