John Newton (Works 6:151):
I remember that, three or four years ago, I mentioned some part of the gospel truth to a gentleman who called on me here, and he answered, “If it is a truth, you are indebted for it to Calvin.” As well might he have said, because Calvin had seen the sun, and has mentioned it in his writings, we build our knowledge of its light and influence upon his testimony.
One thought on “Calvinism”
I’m glad to see that Newton understood that the Gospel is truth and that Calvin was but one of the messengers who understood the message. It is unfortunate that people like Newton’s friend have throughout human history tried to ascribe God’s glory to those who are trying to help us see it for what it is rather than to the God who is over all creation.
